Beaver Creek instructors were the driving force and the top finishers in both the New England Powder 8's at Jay Peak, VT in February and most recently at Aspen for the National Championships, March 1 and 2.
Dominique Godin originally from Jay Peak now skiing at Beaver Creek squeaked out a close second place at NE P'8s and long time BC instructor Gregor Neal with partner Doc Tulin placed 3rd, in a hotly contested field of Eastern skiers.
At the Aspen Nationals in the Womens Division, Beaver Creek's Delfina Darquier and Birgit Kafka placed 1st with a strong performance in deep snow and Shelly Giles with partner Tamara Sentence-Donalson took 3rd place.
In the Mens Open, Adam Hosie and Paul Lorenz took a close 2nd ahead of Willy Glanznig and Dieter Frank, skiing the finals in difficult wind blown slab conditions.

01/25/07 Subject:   2007 New England Powder 8 Championships Schedule
New England Powder 8 Championships Event Information:

I. What is a powder 8 competition?

Teams of two skiers each, skiing in synch at high speeds, the second skier acting as the mirror image of the front skier, as they attempt to create perfect round 8s in the snow.

The skiers are judged on their team work, the shape of their turns, their technical skiing ability, synchronicity, turn symmetry and speed.

In the qualifier, which is open to ANY team on skis who would like to enter, each team will take one run, one team at a time. When all teams have been scored, the top 16 teams move on to the round robin, head to head, competition, seeded into four pools of four teams each based upon their qualifier score.

In the round robins part of the competition, the teams ski head to head against the other three teams in their pool, skiing three runs each. After these runs have been completed, the first place team in each pool, along with the next 4 highest scoring teams, regardless of pool, advance to the single elimination finals on the second day of the event.

In the finals, the top 8 teams square off in single elimination runs, with the top seeded team facing the 8th seeded team, 2 v. 7, 3 v. 6, 4 v. 5, with the winners of each run advancing. There are a total of 8 runs in the finals. [The first 4 runs, then the remaining four teams face off in 2 more runs, then there is a consolation between the 3rd and 4th teams, and a final run between the 1st and 2nd teams for the title.

II. Powder 8 History

Powder 8 skiing is perhaps the oldest form of team skiing, having likely started upon the production of the second pair of skis.

The date at which competitions started in Europe is unknown to skiing historians, but is assumed to have been more than 100 years ago or more.

In North America, all powder 8 ski teams strive for one goal; to make it to the World Powder 8 Championships in Blue River, British Columbia, hosted by Mike Wiegele Heliskiing, the most established outfit in the business. [see: www.wiegele.com for full details on the history of the world championships and list of past winners, including some of the most prestigious names in the history of skiing]

In the United States in 2007, there will be two events to prepare US teams for the trip to the World Championships, the 2007 National Powder 8 Championships at Aspen, Colorado in early March and the New England Powder 8 Championships at Jay Peak Resort, Vermont on February 8, 9, an event which also serves as a qualifier for the World Championships, with the winning team representing New England.

In both events, spectators will see the very best powder skiers the US has to offer, including current and former members of the US National Demo Team and former winners of the World Synchro Ski Championships.

Powder 8 skiing is a truly unique discipline, as it requires a level of team work not seen in most other disciplines. Moreover, unlike racing, it is quite easy for the uninitiated to watch such teams perform and immediately grasp the skill level and quality of skiing being demonstrated.

The New England Powder 8 Championships started in 2003 and is now entering its fifth season at Jay Peak Resort and has seen a number of National Powder 8 Championship winners compete in two of its first three years.

This year, 2007, will see the greatest growth in the event, as we hope that WCAX will also provide some level of event coverage as well, in addition to on going discussions with several radio station groups.

To build awareness and increase the number of new teams for the sport, we are hosting a two day training clinic for ski professionals in conjunction with PSIA-E, at Smugglers Notch on Feruary 1, 2, 2007, an event which will likely produce new teams for the New England Championships. This two day clinic is also being supported by a one day clinic, also at Stowe for Stowe Mountain Resort professionals, a clinic in which ETS members will be participating as students as well.

One of the benefits to the event being hosted by Jay Peak Resort, in addition to an average snowfall of 357, is that it provides a certain proximity to the Burlington, VT market. Certainly, this has also helped us grow and develop our industry product sponsorships. And has led to the on going development of media coverage..

04/30/05 Subject:   Vail slips past Germany for Synchro Title
Aspen World Synchro Championships
April 7 & 8, 2005

The Results are IN!!
The women of Aspen Team Diva were very excited
to act as hosts for the fourth Aspen Synchro
Championships.
April 7th-8th, 2005

With April 7th as a beautiful spring sunny practice day for
all the teams, it was quite a contrast in the weather for the
actual competition day on April 8th.  Despite the occasional
gusts of high winds, periods of heavy snowfall, dark skies,
sunny skies, and lift closures due to lightening, the
competitors were able to finish their 4 passes.  The results
are in and we have a new winner,
Vail Demo Team.

The competition was open to all disciplines, alpine,
snowboard, telemark, adaptive and combinations of any of
these.  However, all the teams were alpine with the winning
team having one adaptive member and skiing with one pole
because of paralysis in that hand. We were very pleased to
welcome a 9th team to the event this year traveling to our
event for the first time, Team Germany!!

Germany showed up strong from the start. It was neck and
neck between Germany and Vail. Germany took 2nd place
with a thin margin.   Last year's winning team, Bachelor
Gulch placed third.
(complete results)

Most of the rest of the teams were from Colorado, however
we were very pleased again to welcome the team from
Turkey who renamed their team, Turkish Delight.  Team
Turkey was a last minute entry as they had some original
members unable to come and put in 2 replacements. They
literally made their plans with just a week before
competition to come. They were the first international team
to attend
our event as they were the first at the previous competition
series. (Battle of the Ski Schools)
This helped bring Germany this year and we are looking
forward to welcoming Davos, Switzerland and Liechtenstein
next year as they expressed interest in attending.
We invite ALL INTERNATIONAL TEAMS to compete next
year.  Please come as the
Aspen World Synchro Championships continues to grow!

The event took place on the North American run at Ajax/
Aspen mountain
and spectators who braved the weather cheered from the
deck of Bonnie's restaurant.
DJ, Ronny kept the tunes rocking with tunes between runs
and weather delays.

The format was 4 passes in total, one was the mandatory
school figure, the other 3 were free passes
with an option to use the jump.

Thanks to all the visiting teams and we hope to see you
again next year.
Sometime in April 2006
Have a great summer!

ANOTHER NEW CHAMPION GRINDS IT OUT

Under horrific conditions, which forced a one day delay in the event, battling high winds and near zero visibility, an elite field of eastern powder 8 ski professionals took to the slopes of Jay Peak Resort in the third annual New England Powder 8 Championships.

Presented by Synchroski.Com and sponsored by Karbon, Atomic, Swany, Simon Pearce Glass, Transpack, Vermont Pure Springs and supported by SCOTT USA and Red Bull, February 11th’s Championship saw teams from Stowe, Okemo, and Jay Peak fight their way through the deep heavy snows of this winter’s heaviest storm, with Team Rudy Project (Doug Schwab of Stowe and Doc Tulin of Okemo) emerging victorious in the weather shortened competition.

Relying upon experience and a noticeably larger turn shape, this team of veterans edged out the Stowe team of Scott Fine and Paul Annetts, with another Stowe team, Doug Stewart and Marsha Curtis, placing third. And earned the right to represent New England at the National Powder 8 Championships in Big Sky, Montana on March 30, where they will face the very best powder 8 skiers the US has to offer, including three former national champions.

Luke Stratford and Peter Kummerer Take First Place

BIG SKY, Mont. — Yellowstone Club’s Luke Stratford and Peter Kummerer won the 2004 U.S. National Powder 8 Championships, which took place at Big Sky Resort on Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27.

Stratford and Kummerer placed second in 2003 and advanced to the final round of the competition again this year in a rematch against Troy Nedved and Nick Herrin of Big Sky. The championship run took place on Marx, which is located on the south face of Lone Peak, and was scored twice due to each team taking a fall on the initial run.

In the end, it was Stratford and Kummerer who took home the 5-day helicopter skiing trip at Mike Wiegele’s Helicopter Skiing Resort in Blue River, British Columbia, Canada. They will also receive free entry into the Mike Wiegele Powder 8 World Championships in Blue River April 10-17, 2004.

This year’s championships attracted fifteen of the top Powder 8 teams from across the country, including five local teams. The skiers were scored by the five judges on synchronization, dynamic skiing, roundness of turns and symmetry. The seeding run and qualifying rounds took place on three inches of fresh snow on the South Wall Friday and the top eight teams advanced to Saturday’s championship rounds.

The results of the championships rounds are as follows: First place- Luke Stratford and Peter Kummerer of the Yellowstone Club; Second place- Nick Herrin and Troy Nedved of Big Sky; Third place- Andy Docken and Jim Schanzenbaker of Aspen; Fourth place- Colin Borrow and Casey Bouius of Sunshine Village; Fifth place- Tom Riggins and Tom Truss of Alta; Sixth place- Rusty Squire and Kraig Kempt of Big Sky; Seventh place- Chris Wilson and Dave Casto of Big Sky; and Eighth place- BJ Aguilar and Jon Morath of Vail.

Big Sky awarded prizes to all fifteen teams with the help of several generous local and national sponsors, including Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing, Lone Mountain Sports, Goode Ski Technologies, Leedom Helmets, Mystery Ranch Backpacks, Big Sky Sports, Gallatin Alpine Sports, Grizzly Outfitters, Avalanche Ski Wear, Red Bull, Hands On Screen Printing, Body & Soul Massage Therapy, Crystal Images Photography and Pickle Barrel of Bozeman. This was the third time in the event’s 26-year history that Big Sky hosted the U.S. National Powder 8 Championships.

Big Sky Resort is owned by Boyne USA, a Michigan-based family-run corporation that owns several mountain and golf resort properties in North America—including Crystal Mountain in Washington; Brighton Ski Resort in Utah; Cypress Mountain in British Columbia and Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands and the Inn at Bay Harbor in Michigan.

03/03/04 Subject:   Vail Team Takes Eastern 8's Championships
The results are in and once again, a team from Vail has risen to the top. Following in the footsteps of Josh Lautenberg and Nina Oqvist, the Gold Peak team of BJ Aguilar and Jon Morath fought their way through the field at the 2005 New England Powder 8 Championships at Jay Peak Resort, narrowly defeating the team of Doc Tulin and Doug Schwab from Stowe in a tight final run, where the difference was truly measured in inches.

With an unprecedented number of teams suffering injuries and being forced to withdraw from the event, the teams from Vail, Stowe, Jay Peak, Okemo and Jiminy Peak put on a show worthy of the crowd and the spectacular environment, highlighting the great snow conditions found at host Jay Peak Resort.

NOTICE

02/15/04 Subject:   Aspen Synchro Championships set for April 5-7
Aspen World Synchro Championships April 5th-7th,
2004

The women of Aspen Team Diva are very excited to act
as hosts again for the second Aspen Synchro
Championships. We would like to take this opportunity
to extend an advance invitation to all teams wishing to
compete. We expect an even more rocking competition
than in 2003. A third day has been added to this year's
event due to expectations of more team entries. All
disciplines are welcome, Alpine, Snowboard, Kids,
Telemark and Adaptive.

Most of us know skiing and snowboarding as individual
sports. Synchronized skiing/snowboarding offers pros a
fantastic social and technical opportunity to make it a
team event. Teams are comprised of eight members, as
well as one alternate, who work together to create
exciting ever-changing formations with technical
precision and skill.

Last season, when the Diva's learned the 2003 Battle of
the Ski Schools International competition in Vail had
been cancelled, the team lobbied for the Aspen Ski
Company to hold the event. Aspen Ski Company was
most accommodating. April 7th - 8th 2003, Aspen
Mountain hosted the Aspen Synchro Championships
on North American. Spectators were given one fantastic
show including sounds from DJ Gustavo Alder from
Argentina. Spectators and competitors alike enjoyed
the music and ski entertainment on a bluebird day from
the deck of Bonnies Restaurant, directly at the base of
the competition hill.

Team Diva has enjoyed several years of competing
with four Championship wins and numerous second
place finishes in the women's category. It is our hope to
keep this type of event alive and provide a venue for
both North American and international teams to gather,
party and compete.

We look forward to hearing of your interest and any
inquiries you may have. Event details are underway
and as soon as they are available, they will be sent out.
We hope this email has sparked your interest and we
look forward to hearing from you soon. Please pass the
word and post this mail in your ski school.

happy turning,

02/12/04 Subject:   New England Powder 8's
Continuing to plug away and make us believe it’s here
to stay, the second annual New England Powder 8
Championships will showcase some of the best
technical skiers in the country February 26th and 27th,
2004 at Jay Peak resort, long known for its profusion of
the white stuff.

For the uninitiated, powder 8 competitions set pairs of
skiers against one another in head to head competition,
where they are judged on their technical skiing, turn
symmetry, synchronicity and, most importantly, the
quality and shape of the “8s” they create with their
tracks. Quite simply, long, narrow turns are “bad” and
will earn a team a quick trip home.

In just its second year, the event is expected to draw a
host of top western teams, among them Troy Nedved &
Nick Herrin of Big Sky, Montana, the 2003 National
Champions, Jim Schanzenbaker (national demo team)
& Andy Docken of Aspen, the 2002 National
Champions, Palo Razus & Fred Fortier, 4th at the 2004
World Championships and Josh Lautenberg & Nina
Oqvist, winners of the 2002 New England Powder 8
Championships.

Supplementing this group of western veterans will be
eastern teams from such well known resorts as Okemo,
Killington, Stowe and Jay Peak.

One aspect of this event which is endearing is the fact
that it is open to any team of two skiers willing to drop
spend the $125 required to enter and test their skills
against the best in the business. When was the last
time you got to tee it up with Tiger or play basketball
with Michael? Here, you may not survive past the one
run qualifier, but at least you will be able to say you
tried.

The event is presented by Synchroski.Com, the on line
home for news and information on the sport (since
1994) and has found more than a modicum of support
from industry names such as Atomic, Rudy Project,
Descente, Scott and OVO, as well as other premier
sponsors such as Simon Pearce Glass, a Vermont
legend.

Information on this event and other powder 8
competitions will be available at www.synchroski.com
throughout the coming season, so have a go and “8 It
Up.”

04/20/03 Subject:   Fuchsberger and Neubauer take World Masters P8's
BY

Andrew Harley

Fuchsberger and Neubauer, defending champions from the masters division, won for their second-straight year with the help of their motto for Powder-8 competition, "Don't leave the door open."

"If you leave a door open like a nice guy, then somebody else will close it." explained Fuchsberger.

Two other teams from Vail placed in the top five at Blue River, in British Columbia. Fred Fortier and Paulo Razzos came in third, and Nina Oqvist and Josh Lautenberg skied into fifth in the open division.

Powder-8 competitions are synchronized-partner events. Two skiers carve figure 8s in untracked powder. One skier leads and the partner follows, covering the leader's tracks in an attempt to emphasize their fluidity.

"Partnership is everything," said Fuchsberger. "To have a good one is kind of like marriage. You have to travel together, ski together and have exceptional communication. So far, Pepi and I are undefeated, so you can tell we have a great connection."

Powder-8 runs are judged by synchronization, symmetry of turns, fall line, dynamics and speed. Considering these regulations, it is important for partners to be similar sizes and shapes.

"I'm the leader. I shape the turns," said Neubauer. "And Franzy's the surgeon. He completes the turns."

Neubauer's position as the leader will, most likely, never change as long as he's a part of this duo.

"One day Franzy led, and I ate snow all the way down," said Neubauer. "It was face shot after face shot. I was smiling but I told him "I can't ski in back.' But he, he loves it."

The World Championships, like the World Series and the Superbowl, is the pinnacle powder-8 competition.

"You have to be totally focused and have a winning attitude. You can be a good powder skier, but that doesn't mean you'll make the cut," said Fuchsberger. "We're never happy. Like Tiger Woods, we're always working to improve."

Fuchsberger and Neubauer skied 193-cm Atomic "Big Daddys," which are wider than the average human thigh, in their victory.

"We go there to win," said Neubauer. "Everybody says it's (Blue River) such an awesome place to be, but winning makes it much better."

Big Sky Resort hosted a successful 2002 U.S. National

marking the first time in its 24-year history that the
competition was held in Montana.  Twelve of the top
Powder 8 teams in the country competed in the event,
which featured six local pairs of skiers. Five judges
scored teams under the categories of synchronization,
dynamic skiing, roundness of turns, and symmetry.

The winning team of Jim Schanzenbaker and Andy
Docken from Aspen-Snowmass received a trip to Mike

highest-placing local team was Rusty Squire and Frank
Silva, who finished second.  The first place team this
year will again win entry to the World Championship
event.

“It was really exciting to have Big Sky host this event.
They really stepped up to the plate and held a great
event that was very long, steep and deep,” said
Schanzenbaker after winning the championship. “The
competition was incredibly close and we were very
fortunate to compete with and against this field.”

Qualifying rounds will be on Friday, March 28, with the
top eight teams advancing to Saturday’s
Championship, which will be held off Lone Peak on
Marx. Big Sky Ski Patrol will close the run two days
prior to the event in order to allow competitors to
compete in untouched snow.

brought in new sponsors and more interest from

11/14/02 Subject:   Can Beaver Creek 4 Peat?
By John Dakin.
Team Beaver Creek could only sit at the bottom and wait, their bid for a "three peat" World Alpine Ski Schools Championship resting on the out come of another team's jump in the "Airs Pairs" competition that concluded three day's of competition at the 2002 World Alpine Ski Schools Championships in Whistler/Blckcomb, British Columbia.
Leading the overall points standing going into the pair of jumps, beaver Creek could only manage a 7th place result in the opener while the Swiss Team from Flumserburg nailed their first jump.
However, with a potential championship in their grasp,Flumserburg faltered, while Beaver Creek recovered their composure to record a solid effort.
This combination of events was enough for Beaver Creek to record the hat-trick, outdistancing the Swiss in the Final standings by 84 points,584-500.
Third place honors went to the team from Malbun, Liechtenstein with 468 points, while the top five was rounded out by Team Vail in 4th with 400 points and a tie for 5th between Oberfalts,Germany and host Whistler/ Blackcomb women's team with 292 points.
The big question is how many championships are too many for one team? Beaver Creek's team has been active now for nearly 9 years, has well trained foreign instructors and a powerful marketing and fundraising program started by Gregor Neal and Doc Tulin.
With the strong clientel base at Vail/Beaver Creek, local teams are raising up to $30,000, light years ahead of other teams which in the long term may hinder teams attending the competition through lack of funds while local vail teams excel year after year.
The last thing we want is a World Championship full of Colorado teams.

04/25/00 Subject:   Team Obermeyer wins World Synchro Championships
For immediate release:

Surviving a near fall by one of their skiers in Saturday's compulsory
run at the World Alpine Synchro Ski
Championships, Team Obermeyer held on to their scant two point lead over
the Snowmass Big Burners,
winning their first World Championship and the first World Championship
for a Beaver Creek Resort
Team, wresting the title back from the Austrian and Swiss powerhouses.

Afternoon lightning forced event organizers to cancel the later half of
the competition on Saturday. Beaver Creek was on top of the ladder after
one day’s skiing and one pass on Saturday, to claim the title.

“ Their second pass on Friday was excellent,” said event organizer
Hayden Scott of EEF Productions. “ The way they pulled the demonstration
back in off the jump was very skillful.”

Twenty-five teams of elite ski and snowboard instructors competed on Zot
run above Mid-Vail. Teams performed high-speed precision skiing and
snowboarding demonstrations, with nine top international judges
evaluating teams on synchronization, degree of difficulty, ski technique
and overall appearance.

Members of the winning team included Scotty Dagg, Palo Razus, Ian
Parham, Dieter Frank, Chris Ongarello, Ben Linscott, Claudia Bossi and
Delphina Darquier.

Head Coach Doc Tulin noted, "It's been an incredibly long and trying
season for this team, but in the end
the reward far exceeds anything imaginable. Having this dream come to
fruition after claiming the US
National title last week....well, it's just hard to describe. Thanks to
our sponsors, Sport Obermeyer (

Bolle (www.bolle.com) and SCOTTUSA (www.scottusa.com) we are on top of

01/28/00 Subject:   BC Sanctions Another Demo Team

Dee Byrne, Ski School Director of the world famous Beaver Creek Ski School, has generously
provided funding to enter the newly formed Bachelor Gulch Synchro Demo Team in this years
WSSC competition. The team is named after a part of the Beaver Creek village to village skiing
experience, but is a representative of the Beaver Creek Ski Scool. Coach Dan Taylor was delighted
to receive full support for early morning training and began working with the team officially last
weekend.
Dan, a previous competitor with two top-five results in his five year history with the sport, selected
his team members earlier in January and is again gunning for a top slot in the finals.
"Most of the team have had previous experience with the Worlds, and know what is
expected of them..." said the new coach after Sunday's hard early training. "The new guys were
selected both for their ability with their feet and for their lack of fear of speed and big air.

11/08/99 Subject:   ELITE SKIERS EMBARK ON DISABLED SYNCHRO TEAM
Imagine flying off a 90 foot jump at high speed, slamming into the ground
on landing and returning to a formation of eight skiers, making intertwined
turns in perfect rhythm all the way down the hill—-each synchronized skier
less than three feet from the other.

Now imagine the same thing….only this time, YOU’RE PARALYZED FROM THE WAIST
DOWN!!

Introducing The White Mountain Adaptive Ski School's TEAM SCREAM, the first
100% mono(sit)ski team to compete in the World Alpine Ski Championships in
the year 2000. The competition, which is seen by millions on global tv,
pits the hottest world-wide demo teams of instructors against each other
for the world crown. Headed up by ten year US Ski Team veteran,
Paralympic, World and National Champ, Chris Devlin-Young, WMASS TEAM SCREAM
has been two years in the making: In 1998, Devlin-Young and Kevin Bramble
became the first disabled competitors in the event. They anchored the
Silver Creek (Co) team to a Combined victory, becoming the first disabled
skiers in athletic history to compete straight-up against an able-bodied
field and win a World Title.

The team finished second in 1999. However, after the event, the judges
encouraged Devlin-Young to bring a 100% monoski team in 2000. "They said I
made some of the best turns in the event. Able-bodied or disabled. They
felt that, if our entire team could ski like that, we could be contenders
for the Overall title. This acceptance is what we have been working
towards for years. The support has been incredible from everyone, starting
with Silver Creek, who believed in us first."

Due to the lack of depth in the ranks of adaptive skiing, there is no ski
area with eight monoskiers/instructors. Although the instructors selected
for WMASS TEAM SCREAM teach at different adaptive ski schools across the
US, they all participate in travelling clinics and camps through-out the
US, working as a whole on behalf of an organizing body or ski school. The
home base for the team, where it will conduct clinics and train, is the
PSIA-recognized WMASS at Loon Mountain NH. In addition to Captain
Devlin-Young, the following instructors comprise TEAM SCREAM:

Kevin Bramble, US Ski Team alumni, 1998 World Synchro Ski Champ,
Bill Bowness, National and World race medals, US Ski Team alumni,
Jim Finch, US Ski Team alumni, 1997 National Slalom Champ,
Sam Ferguson, bumps specialist, half-pipe competitor,
Cris Criswell, White Mountain Adaptive Ski School,
Jay Germaine, Disabled Veteran, ski racer,
Geoff Krill, White Mountain Adaptive Ski School,

Devlin-Young concedes that there are many elements conspiring against this
pioneering team. "It was an impossibility to find eight disabled ski
instructors from one ski school--that simply doesn't exist in adaptive
instruction at this moment in time. Therefore, we are at a disadvantage
because we won’t be able to train as an entire team until just before the
event. Several groups of us will be training together, and the majority
will train at WMASS at Loon, but for the Big Event, lodging and travel
expenses are doubled and we need much more equipment and tech support due
to the stress the monoski places on the snow ski. Raising the money is an
uphill battle, and will continue to be so until the event. So the
selection of team members was key. They have to be mentally tough,
self-motivated and independent, fast learners and have a real feel for the
snow. As the first disabled team, all eyes are gonna be on us—and you only
get one chance to make a first impression."

Despite the hardships, the team has endured. Devlin-Young explains why: "We
want to smash the notion that people with disabilities are fragile" he
explains. But, beyond that, TEAM SCREAM has as its' ultimate goal bringing
global awareness for the recreational outlets available to persons with
disabilities. "We're all instructors, and we want to help spread the
'gospel' of adaptive skiing. We do it for the person sitting in the
hospital, feeling like life is over, jockeying the remote. I want them to
see us flying off a 90 foot jump on tv. 16 years ago, that miserable
patient was me, and if I had seen something like that, it would have saved
me years of heart-ache and bitterness."

Look for Loon's WMASS TEAM SCREAM to "smash notions"(and kick butt) at The
World Alpine Ski Championships April 21st-23rd in Vail, Colorado.

05/01/99 Subject:   Austrian Team Ramsau dominates World Championships
With an unquestionably dominant performance in Vail, Colorado at the
1999 World Alpine Synchro Ski Championships April 23rd and 24th, Austria
further cemented its claim as the world's pre - eminent alpine skiing
nation.
Team Ramsau, captained by Christian Perner and coached by Karl
Tritscher, swept to their first World Championship with twenty points to
spare. Silver Star, Canada was a distant second despite four solid
passes following a disappointing compulsory figure on day one.
Snowmass, Colorado, in a surprising performance, climbed to third place
on the final pass of the championship, finishing as the top US team,
just two points ahead of Flumserberg, Switzerland, followed by Team
Obermeyer of Beaver Creek to round out the top five in the world.
The women's division was dominated by a new team from Vail, Team
Contessa, while the snowboard division was also won by Chris Sandoski's
crew from Vail.
In the combined division, we saw another new international squad,
Soldeu - El Tarter of Andorra, winning their division in a first
attempt.
1999 saw a record turnout by international squads, including Ramsau
AUSTRIA, Oberpfalz GERMANY, Flumserberg, SWITZERLAND, Grindelwald
SWITZERLAND, Kranj - Krvavec, SLOVENIA, Solden - Hochsolden AUSTRIA,

TURKEY and Uludag TURKEY.

In 2000 with a minimum of two events in the US, the Aspen National
Synchro Ski Championships and the World Championships in Vail, this
international participation in US synchro skiing is certain to grow.

In 2000, competition hills are expected to expand in both length and
width, not to mention certain "tailoring" of the hill to provide
additional options for snowboard teams, changes which, along with the
implementation of timing for the compulsory run, are sure to increase
the pace for both athletes and spectators.

April 10, 1999 Aspen, Colorado

Today, on Aspen Mountain, spectators were treated to a rare show, as the
demo teams of Aspen hosted two teams from Beaver Creek Resort in a
friendly scrimmage which may very well be a precursor to a US National
Synchro Skiing Championship in Aspen in 2000.

The highlight of the day involved the friendly battle between Aspen's
top team , the Bombardiers, and Beaver Creek's Team Obermeyer, two of
the top American teams heading into this month's World Alpine Synchro
Ski Championships in Vail to do battle with the rest of the world.

Both of these local giants of synchro skiing will have their hands full when the European teams arrive next week for the world championships. European teams, made up two of the top ten teams, in the 1998 world championships and are expected to do well this year. Beaver Creek, now in their 6th season in demo skiing, is training three hours every other day until the competition.
" We are here to win and keep the championship trophy here in Colorado", says Beaver Creek team captain Scotty Dagg.
The way Beaver Creek skiied in Aspen that could be a distinct possibility.

04/05/99 Subject:   Beaver Creek instructors take on the world
By Pam Holmes Boyd
Vail Daily Correspondant

If you think international ski competition is done with Vail for the
1998-99 season, think again.
The World Alpine Synchro Skiing Championships
will hit Vail’s slopes April 23-24 and an estimated 32 teams from all
over the globe are set to compete. The sport is the passion of locals
Douglas “Doc” Tulin of Avon and Gregor Neal of Eagle. Both men are ski
instructors and both caught the demo skiing bug years ago. Now they are
both ready for the rest of the world to discover their sport.
Demonstration skiing, or synchronized skiing, is a relatively young
sport with roots that stretch back decades. From the time when ski areas
first opened, instructors on the way to teach morning lessons have
always jumped into formation, performing intricate maneuvers and high
speed crossovers designed to entice the public to enroll in ski school.
Synchronized skiing has taken that marketing gimmick and turned it into
a team skiing discipline featuring eight members squads judged on style,
difficulty, athleticism and teamwork.
Competition is divided into two days and features free ski and
compulsory ski elements. While teams can showcase their individual
talents in the free ski part of the program, all teams perform the same
compulsory routines. “Bottom line is teams that score well on the school
figures can win a world championship,” said Neal.
Both Neal and Tulin stressed the watchability of the sport. “You don’t
have to be a skier to look at the demonstration and see if it makes
geometric sense. That’s key,” said Tulin. “And it’s the only team
discipline in skiing.”
It’s also a very democratic sport. Men and women compete together. “We
have top females who we don’t look at as top females. We look at them as
top skiers,” he said.
“We have everything. If that’s not being politically correct, I don’t
know what would be,” said Neal.
From their own competitive involvement in the 1980s stretching to their
current work coaching the Beaver Creek Resort Area team, Tulin and Neal
have already seen synchronized skiing make major advances. “The first
year, we called it the world championships, but it was really a local
competition,” said Neal. Now the event will live up to its billing, not
only with teams from different ski areas across the globe, but within
the membership of individual teams. Take Neal and Tulin’s Beaver Creek
squad as an example. Members are Scottie Dagg, Dieter Frank, Chris
Ongarello, Claudia Bossi, Nick Murray, Ian Parham, Niclas Kullberger,
Lance Tweden and Palo Razus representing the countries of New Zealand,
Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Austria and Slovakia.
“Half of the field features former racers,” said Neal.
Tulin and Neal have high hopes for the future of synchronized skiing.
“We want it to become an Olympic sport. You have synchronized swimming
and ballroom dancing, so why not?” said Tulin. “But there’s no doubt
it’s an uphill marketing battle.”
The pair has selected the Internet as the front line for their
publicity war. The U.S. Demonstration Skiing Association has a flashy
netsite that is attracting up to 2,000 hits a week. The site features
everything from a photo gallery to video clips, to talk forums and along
the way lets visitors know everything they ever wanted to about
synchronized skiing. The website address is www.vailcolorado.net/demoski

Additionally, this month’s world championships will be taped by the
Outdoor Channel for broadcast later this year and Ski Magazine is
planning a February 200 article about the sport. Both Tulin and Neal are
thrilled to see the sport gaining stature, but for now, they also both
stress that people involved in synchronized skiing are competing for the
love of it.
“These guys don’t get paid for their time. For this group, it’s not
about money. It’s about pride and respect,” Tulin concluded.

03/24/99 Subject:   Head to head re-match
Team Obermeyer will be traveling to Aspen Mountain on April 10th for
a friendly scrimmage with the four Aspen Demo Teams, including the team
that finished second overall at the 1998 World Alpine Synchro Ski
Championships, The Boys From The Hood. The training will take place on
International, site of the 1968 Interski, and is easily viewed by the
public.

03/20/99 Subject:   World Synchro Championships go International
The 1999 World Alpine Synchro Ski Championships will be held on
Vail Mountain April 23rd and 24th. All teams will be training at Vail
Mountain on Thursday, April 22nd. The event will be taking place above

competition other than the cost of your lift ticket. There will be
thirty teams from across the skiing world, including Austria,
Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey, the US and more, battling it out for the
overall title, in addition to titles in the small ski school division,
women's division, snowboarding division and combined division. Cash and
